Juan Martín del Potro (Spanish tennis player)

Juan Martín del Potro (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈxwan marˈtin del ˈpotɾo]; born 23 September 1988) is an Argentine professional tennis player who is the current highest-ranked Argentine and the 10th ranked player in the world. Del Potro achieved a top 10 ranking by the Association of Tennis Professionals for the first time on October 6, 2008. In January 2010, he reached a career-high ranking of World No. 4.

Having started playing tennis at the age of seven, del Potro won his first senior match in 2004 at the age of 15. In 2008, he became the first player in ATP history to win his first four career titles in as many tournaments. He also completed the second longest winning streak in 2008, and the second longest by a teenager in the Open Era, behind Rafael Nadal—with his winning sequence spanning 23 matches over five tournaments.[3] Del Potro captured his maiden Grand Slam title at the 2009 US Open defeating Roger Federer in the final, and Nadal in the semifinal, becoming the first man ever to beat both Federer and Nadal in the same Grand Slam. He became the second Argentine and the fifth youngest man to win the US Open title in the Open Era. Later that year he qualified for the 2009 Barclays ATP World Tour Finals where he was the runner-up.

Libby Trickett

libbytrickett-420x0

Libby Trickett has announced that she has retired from competitive swimming.

The triple Olympic gold medallist won eight world championship gold medals and is a former world record holder.

“It’s something that I’ve been thinking about for almost a year now, and after much consideration and speaking with my family and close friends I know that I am ready to move on to the next stage of my life and career,” Trickett told a media conference at North Sydney Pool.

Swimming is such a great sport to be involved with and has been a huge part of my life for such a long time.

“Through swimming I’ve been able to travel the world doing something that I love and this great sport has provided me with so many fantastic memories and opportunities.

“I would like to thank everyone for their fantastic support throughout my career, especially my family and coaches Stephan Widmer and Grant Stoelwinder.”

Trickett had not been back in training since the controversial Rome World Championships in August – the titles farcically dominated by polyurethane swimsuits – and the 24-year-old admitted she was pondering her future.

Last week at a sponsors’ launch, she announced that a decision on whether she would continue or quit was imminent, as it had reached “crunch time” with the selection trials for next year’s Commonwealth Games just three months away.

“A decision does need to be made in the next few weeks. It’s really important for me to do that. I do feel like I am getting closer, but I want to make sure I’m making the right decision, whatever that may be. I need to take my time and I’ve been really enjoying my break and doing lots of different things,” she said last Monday.

“I’m trying to swim at least once a week and I’m trying to keep fit and active, because I love the feeling of being healthy. But you want to have good preparation for [selection] trials coming up in March, so, while I’ve tried not to rush it, it is crunch time and I do need to make a decision.”

Ski Dubai

ski12_4

Young snowboarders spray snow into the air as they perform stunts during an extreme sports style competition at Ski Dubai.

The excitement is played out to the background of hip hop and rock music being pumped out through large speakers by a DJ working on a specially constructed turntable.
The event is part of the Mall of the Emirates attraction’s freestyle nights that are running during October and November and are open to anyone wanting to compete for points and prizes.

The competition is being sponsored by ski wear firm Oakley and takes place on October 19 and November 16 and 30.

Competitions will include “Big Air” which allows competitors to take off and perform airborne tricks after launching off a ramp and “Slope Style” where they show off their moves whilst skiing or snowboarding down the slope runs.

Tom Aitchison, 13, originally from the UK has been in Dubai for two-and-a-half years, said: “This is fantastic. I have been doing this for nine months and made a lot of friends.”

He said he first got involved after watching previous events with other friends.

He said: “It’s always a really good atmosphere when they run the events and I wish they did them more regularly.”
Om Jang, 30, from Nepal, has been in Dubai for a year and has been snowboarding at the mall for six months.
He said: “I really love doing it because it’s an unusual activity to do in a country like this.

“I particularly like doing the slide jumps and trying out new tricks and stunts.

“It takes a lot of practice but once you get the hang of it you can do all kinds of crazy stuff.”

The competitions are split into under 16 and over 17 categories and there is no extra fee to take part apart from the normal Ski Dubai entry charges.

Jackie Longworth, a spokeswoman for Oakley, said: “The Oakley Freestyle Nights are all about giving people interested in ski sports the chance to enjoy their passion in a safe and friendly environment.

“This year we are also introducing a points system and a final on November 30 where we will have some great prizes on offer.

“These events are open to everyone not just the hardcore snowboarders and it’s as much about introducing these activities to a wider audience as anything else.”

Maria Sharapova

For celebrities, there is the curse of Hello! magazine, as a number of couples have invited photographers into their ’sumptuous homes’ and then split up not long afterwards.

For professional tennis players at Roland Garros, there is the curse of the tournament programme, as, every day this year, the player who has been chosen as the image for the front has gone on to lose that very day.

Maria Sharapova became the latest cover-star to go out. Of all her magazine covers, the front of the tournament programme was somewhere she really didn’t want to be.

“Maria, full of grace,” it said under a picture of the perfumed Siberian, but the former world No 1 did not look so poised when she found herself at 0-6, 0-5 and match point down in her quarter-final against Dominika Cibulkova, of Slovakia.

Sharapova, playing at her first grand slam since last summer’s Wimbledon, saved a match point with a forehand winner, and avoided losing 6-0, 6-0.

But having only returned to the tour in Warsaw last month, after missing nine months of tennis because of a shoulder injury, Sharapova was soon out of the tournament, with a 6-0, 6-2 defeat, Cibulkova reaching the semi-finals of a major for the first time.

Cibulkova will play Dinara Safina, the world No 1 and last year’s runner-up. Such had been the ease with which Safina had made the quarter-finals, reaching that stage by dropping just five games, that it must have come as a shock to the Russian’s system when she actually had to work for her victory, coming from a set down for a 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Victoria Azarenka, of Belarus.

Safina is now just two more victories away from becoming a grand slam champion for the first time, which she needs to do to justify her position at the top of the rankings.

Isner ousts Thiemo de Bakker in Washington tennis

WASHINGTON — "Marathon Man" John Isner remains mentally worn down after a record-shattering 11-hour Wimbledon triumph but he had enough to beat the man who ousted him in June at the ATP Washington Classic.

The fifth-seeded American fired 15 aces to defeat Dutchman Thiemo de Bakker 7-6 (8/6), 7-6 (10/8) and reach the third round at the 1.4 million-dollar hardcourt tournament but brushed aside the idea of a revenge-minded victory.

"It wasn't like a revenge factor at all," Isner said. "I didn't think about that at all. I treated it like any other match."

Isner's epic three-day opening-round Wimbledon victory over France's Nicolas Mahut - which featured a 70-68 fifth set that alone was longer than any prior match - was followed by a loss to de Bakker in which Isner won only five games.

But the Wimbledon aftermath for Isner has become a fatiguing series of questions and jokes as the 25-year-old American with one of the most powerful serves in tennis tries to make his name for something more than longevity.

"I'm trying to (put it behind me), but I'm feeling it," a weary Isner said. "Mentally I'm a bit worn out answering questions about it, hearing jokes every single day.

"But I can't escape it."

Isner, who will meet Belgian Xavier Malisse on Thursday for a quarter-final spot, said he has exchanged e-mails with Mahut since their historic match but has not followed his results.

Isner, who won his first ATP title in January at Auckland, improved to an ATP-best 25-14 in tie-breakers this year thanks to the Dutchman's double fault to end the first set and the last of Isner's 15 aces on his third match point.

"It wasn't pretty," Isner said. "Not much was working right."

US second seed Andy Roddick cruised into the third round, the three-time Washington champion beating Slovenian qualifier Grega Zemlja 6-4, 6-4 in 84 minutes by winning the only two break points of the match.

"I accomplished what I wanted to... get back to playing clean tennis, things that don't show up in the stat sheet but that win matches," Roddick said. "I can improve a little but I got what I wanted out of the match.

"It was a good opportunity to find some rhythm, get my feet under me, get into the tournament and the summer. When I move the ball well and get my teeth into points, that's a solid match."

Spanish third seed Fernando Verdasco saved two match points in the ninth game of the second set and rallied to defeat Germany's Michael Berrer 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (8/6).

The 10th-ranked Spaniard, who won at San Jose and Barcelona earlier this year, nearly lost for the fourth time in five matches since reaching the round of 16 at the French Open before battling back.

"I was just trying to play my best to the end," Verdasco said. "Even match points down I was just trying to put the ball in and make him put the ball in.

"I got a little lucky."

Verdasco, who next plays US qualifier Ryan Sweeting, escaped match points on errant Berrer backhands and broke in the ninth and 11th games to launch his comeback.

"When I broke back, I started to get confidence and started playing much better," Verdasco said. "Those games were the turning point of the match."

Czech top seed Tomas Berdych, the runner-up to Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon, opens after a bye with a Wednesday match against Russian Dmitry Tursunov.

Mardy Fish stretched his career-best win streak to 11 matches by beating Serbian Viktor Troicki 6-4, 6-3. The American won Newport and Atlanta crowns in July and has jumped from 79th to 35th in the rankings since dropping 33 pounds.

"I'm now able to train and do things I couldn't in the past," Fish said. "I'm able to get to shots I used to not get to. I feel like a completely different player, a completely different person."

Serbian Janko Tipsarevic defeated France's Arnaud Clement 6-4, 6-0, to book a second-round match against US sixth seed Sam Querrey, who beat Tipsarevic in a Los Angeles semi-final last week on the way to his fourth title of the year.

Belarusian tennis star Victoria Azarenka ends title drought by beating Sharapova in Stanford final

Victoria Azarenka (Viktoryya Azaranka) of Belarus on Sunday won her first tournament this year by beating former world number one Maria Sharapova in the final of the Stanford Classic in the United States, BelaPAN reports.

The world number 18, who turned 21 on July 31, defeated the Russian 6-4 6-1 in less than 90 minutes to clinch the fourth title in her career.

Ms. Azarenka beat, among others, France's Marion Bartoli and Australia's Samantha Stosur en-route to the final.
